Comox Valley RCMP investigate fire inside Walmart

Comox Valley RCMP is investigating after a fire occurred inside the Walmart Store on October 10, 2024.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. Comox Valley RCMP was notified by the Courtenay Fire Department that they were attending a call for a fire inside the Walmart, in Courtenay.

Shoppers and staff inside the store were evacuated while the fire in the menswear area was quickly extinguished. The fire is being considered suspicious. Fortunately, no injuries were reported but the store remains closed. Investigators at the scene were able to identify a suspect who was taken into custody.

The Integrated Forensic Identification Section is assisting as the investigation progresses.

We are looking to speak with any witnesses who were at Walmart, or may have been in the area at the time the fire occurred. Said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP.

The suspect will remain in custody pending a court appearance.
